Onam is the kerala state festival and it is celebrated with extreme enthusiasm and zeal. Onam is celebrated beacuse in order to welcome the King Mahabali. The festival is marked with wonderful celebrations including Boat races, song and dance, lots of good food, and as much exotica as one can take, are there for the asking.
Onam is also celebrated as the harvest festival of the state and is celebrated in the beginning of the first month (Chingam) of Malayalam Calendar (Kolla Varsham). This month falls in August-September according to the Gregorian calendar and in Bhadrapada/ Avani/ Simha/ Bhadon according to the other Indian (Hindu) Calendars. In 2020, Onam falls on Monday, August 31th.
